As some of you know, I’m one of the Co-Creators of the CITY OF THE GODS. Now that dT&T is done, I’ve gotten back to working on that project again. About a year or so ago, a fan created a sample book reading for me from the first novel, so I finally created a full-color illustrated video to go with the book reading. Its only about 3 minutes long, but I think it makes for an interesting multi-media experiment. Would love to know what you all think.

I delved into creating videos a couple of years ago for book trailers for the first two City of the gods books and for the Deluxe T&T Kickstarter.  I’ve really spent the last two years working on Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls and the Grimtooth’s Ultimate Traps Collection.  Right after that, I plunged into the 50th Anniversary Nuclear War Game.  So its nice to go back to working on my own projects after so long a pause.

I’m using a program called Power Director and its not too bad.  The instruction book is sort of weird.  They tell you the features, but don’t really tell you how to use them, so I have to guess for the most part.  Still it gets the job done anyway.

Catching Up 2015

A selection of my projects for 2015 (so far)

A selection of my projects for 2015 (so far)

Hi all!  As you can see it been quite a while since my last post.  Much like one of my partners on the Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls Project, I have been putting off blogging so that I could concentrate on getting that project and the Traps collection finished.

The good news is that BOTH of those are now done and my schedule has opened up a little bit.  I can finally do things like get back to working on the City of the Gods, some comic projects and organizing my art and writings.

With Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls I did the layout, drew the maps, scanned and inked many of Liz Danforth’s pieces as well as many of my own illustrations.  I was also the Project manager and it was my job to keep everyone motivated and on deadline so that the book was completed in as timely a manner as possible.  dT&T took over two years, but it ended up being a beautiful 386 page book, so when you see it, you’ll understand WHY it took so long.  I also created numerous other books and items for the games that were part of the kickstarter.  One of my favorites if the GM screen which incorporates the art of close to a dozen different cover artists of classic T&T solos.

The GM Screen - my digital collage using classic solo covers.

Since last time I  also did several projects for Goodman Games including the Ultimate Traps Collections, Grimtooth’s Museum of Death, A Judges Guild Collection, Tales of Shudder Mountain and The 998th Conclave of Wizards.  Several of these are DCC Modules.  I hope to do more for them in the future.

In the Comic Dept I came out with Strange Bedfellows #5, which came out rather nicely.  It included a cover by Randy Vogel and a 3 new Demi /Vampirooni stories, in one of them they are teamed-up.

Fogel’s Underground Price Guide came out earlier this year and I did a lot of the ads and article layout for that, including a 2 page Vampirooni/Dan Fogel comic with Randy Vogel.  Many of the comics I have done over the last 20 years are also listed there, so I am a part of Underground comix history.

Currently I’m working on the 50th Anniversary Nuclear War Card Game and I just got the cover done on that, so here it is. I have about 17 cards to create as well as some new population cards.  So I remain busy.

I’ll try to post more frequently – sorry about the long delays between posts!

What I was busy doing in 2014 - some of the highlights.

What I was busy doing in 2014 – some of the highlights.

Yes, its been a while since I posted here.  A lot has gone on in 2014 and most of it has been good. I thought this time I’d go over just some of the things I have been working on this year and a couple of highlights of things going on around me.

Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls:  On the T&T front, we got everything done for the Kickstarter except the rules.  But even those are well on their way to completion and we have released the complete core rules to the fans via PDF.  I think the two things I’m most proud of on the dT&T front are the 4 metal coins we created and the Adventurer’s Compendium. I told the rest of the Tunnels & Trolls team that of all the items that exist for T&T, these 4 coins may still be around in 500 years, whereas all the books will have crumbled to dust.  The rulebook itself is turning out to be one of my high career points in terms of production design, layout, art, maps and graphics.  Can’t wait to for that to come out. It’s been an honor to work once again with Ken St Andre, Liz Danforth, Rick Loomis and Bear Peters.

The Adventurers Compendium: is an 88 page collection of solo adventures from the pages of Sorcecer’s Apprentice magazine. I scanned in all the solos (which were scattered throughout each issue, then converted them to text and relaid them out using art from the magazine and from numerous other obscure T&T publications that I had been tracking down and scanning.  The book also contains a lot of my art and graphics.  I think its one of the best things we did for the dT&T Kickstarter.  I sort of dragged the rest of the team into doing this book, but in the end they all thought it was well worth the effort.

Ace of Aces Book:  This was a project that another artist started and then he just quit working on it.  In the end Rick Loomis called me in and I was able to finish all the scans, cleanup and create the covers and interior rules pages to go with it. It consists of two small hardback book with a slipcase and gold foil stamp and it looks perfect!

Demi & the Monsters of the 3rd Reich:  This is a comic by Randy Vogel & I that has been in the works for several years.  It was really gratifying to have this in time for San Diego Comic Con this year. Demi and & Vampirooni fans loved it. ITs a great mystic fantasy history behind events in WWII.

Demi meets Captain Fortune #1 (In color!)  This book had been out of print for some time and when Peter Penn & I finally worked out a way to reprint it, he wanted to do it in color, so how could I say no?  He did an incredible job with the coloring and the book looks gorgeous.  We also added an 8 page story we did that was out of print, making it a 48 page book.

Demi & Shaundra #1  This book is a reprint of the Rip Off Press book from 1997.  Its been out of print for almost 10 years and now its back with a new pin-up or two. It looks great in this new deluxe format, with a thicker cover and glossy pages.

Coming Soon: The Ultimate Traps Collection:  This book contains the first 5 complete Grimtooth’s Traps book plus interviews, a color cover gallery and new articles and Traps written by yours truly.  This will be a hardcover book with a foil stamped slipcase.  Its going to be beautiful.

Coming Soon: Fogel’s Underground Comic Price Guide:  This is another thick book I worked on with Dan Fogel & Mark Fox.  My job was to layout the articles, build the ads, put together the comic images and create a 2 page comic with Dan & Randy Vogel that fit the theme of the Guide.  This is another book I’m really looking forward to seeing soon…

Mythic Tales: City of the Gods 2:  All the stories are in and I am laying out this book and getting the art put together for it.  Our plan is to have it out before the end of the year.  Look for new stories by Ken St. Andre, Randy Lindsay, Wynn Mercere and M.Scott Verne.  Stories starring D’Molay, Mazu, Sergius, Bast, Tehn-Mer and other deities and demi-gods.

In other great news Wikipedia has finally decided I am notable enough to have a page just about me.  If you want to check that out, you can see it here:

So that’s been my year in a nut shell  – as you  can see I’ve been busy.  I’ve also picked up some new clients that are going to keep me busy as well (more about them next time)…   Thanks for reading – Steve

Here are 8 new products we are releasing at GenCon.

Here are 8 new products we are releasing at GenCon.

Just a short posting this week.  I wanted to let any of you gamer fans out there know that I’ll be attending GenCon from the August 15th – 18th.  I’ll be set up at the Flying Buffalo booth.  I’m there to help promote the new Deluxe T&T products we have finished in time for the Convention.  As you can see from the picture above, we’ve been quite busy.

I’ll also have the City of the Gods books and comics to sell.  If you don’t know, Wynn and Scott finished the second novel and it came out a month or so ago.  I’ll have the new novel with me along with the first one, the new Art of the Gods book and the City of the Gods Map Pack.

Here are some of the City of the Gods Books I'll have at GenCon.

I may even be doing some sketches– it depends on how busy things are though.

Rick Loomis and Ken St Andre will also be at the Con.  Unfortunately Liz Danforth was not able to attend, but we’ll have a lot of her prints and original art on hand, so if you want to get any of her stuff – you’ll be able to.

So please stop by if you can and say hi!

After GenCon when I get back to town, my main effort will be to finish the sketch cards for Mars Attacks: Invasion.  Topps hired me to 100 sketch cards for them and I have 87 of them done and ready to go.  Visit their official Facebook page here:

Below are 4 of the cards I did for the set.  I really tried to make each one unique and a different picture.  I’ll do a whole post about the sketch cards in the near future.

Well, that’s it for this post.  Feel free to comment and I’ll see you all soon.

I’m working on so many projects that are fantasy and sci-fi related, but are taking place in very different arenas, (games, comics, novels, cards) that I thought I needed a place where I could sort of bring them all together and let fans of my comics know about my gaming art and fans of City of the Gods know about my trading card and other fantasy work.  So now you can see it all in one place.

I owe Liz Danforth a big thanks for for sitting me down and telling me that I need to do a better job of promoting ME as an artist, instead of just working in the background and letting the project I’m working on be the only thing that let’s people know who I am and what I’m up to.  By the way, if you want to see what Liz is up to, check out her blog here:

I’ll try over the next week or so to post about each of the major projects I’m currently involved in.
For now though, let me touch on the main things I’m working on this month:

Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls – This is actually a lot of books and items for the dT&T RPG.  I just finished the additions to Dungeon of the Bear and it will go to press in the next few days.
Here’s a link to our dT&T Blog:

Topps Mars Attacks Sketch Cards – Yes Topps hired me to create 100 hand drawn sketch cards for their upcoming set of Mars Attacks cards.  I already have 10 full color cards finished!
Details here:

City of the Gods – I just got the new Art of the Gods book done for Comic Con.  It’s a 48 page full color collection of the art I have created for the City of the Gods novels, games and comics.  I’m really proud of this book – it came out great.
See it at Amazon:

There are several more, but these are the biggies.  I hope that this blog will become the place for fans of my work to find out a little more about me and the other things I’m doing.  I know I have a lot of clients who are probably not aware of who else I’ve done work for, so now maybe they’ll think of me for different jobs, besides just illustrations or pre-press.  I also do logo design, maps, marketing, web design, digital restoration and book design.   I’ve co-produced a movie, created successful Kickstarter campaigns, written articles, done game design and more.  You can see more about my skill set on my linked in page:.  My LinkedIn profile is here:

Ok I think that is a good start.  I’d love to hear your comments and suggestions on what you’d like to see me put on this new blog.  At the very least drop a comment of support or wish me well.  Thanks a lot for your time!  I’ll be posting more art and samples in the next few days, so stay tuned.
